I'm relatively new to tarot and I knew it wasn't the most beginner friendly, but I love my Thoth deck. Honestly I just fell in love with Frieda Harris' artwork the first time I saw it and ran with that.

Barbara Walker Tarot is really heavy on mythology and occult references.
Unlike RW, the symbols aren’t universal — a lot of them come straight from specific ancient cults.
If you don’t know the myths, you’ll miss a big part of the meaning.
It can feel deeper, but also way less intuitive.
The tone is harsher too — less romantic, more about power, control, and life/death cycles.
Feminine energy here feels like a raw force, not something soft or comforting.

What are some of your favorite tarot decks from a creator that definitely “gets it”?

Please use the Search function before posting. The tarot is talked about in many threads. For example this one:

True Black Tarot is my fav mostly for the feel but I also connect with the gender bending imagery.

The deck I am using at the time, both to get more familiar with the egregore and tradition of the deck, as well as using one where wands is air and swords is fire, is the Rose Tarot by Nigel Aldcroft Jackson.

The deck I've used the most and probably would recommend to have in your collection is the Thoth tarot.

I most often go to my Norse Runic deck. It has vivid beautiful imagery and has the double symbolism of the runes. Since this is my heritage, it resonates with me. However when I was still working on my series The Varangian Chronicles, I tended to turn to my Byzantine deck. Sometimes I got some pretty awesome inspiration from it.

The Hermetic Tarot contains everything like the Thoth, but without the Thelemic influences and colour. It's a good deck to accompany it.

I started studying Tarot lately with a Thoth deck. It is just so rich and vivid and strong. I could say hypnotizing. Still learning the card meanings, but slowly intertwining my experiences with them.

I just bought Yoshitaka Amano deck, 'cuz it's just so pretty androgynous and fairy like. Also it's a pip deck which might make build my intuition muscle up. But what drove me to this deck is Amano just pulling his own subconscious creative meanings onto tarot, completely losing now classic RJW tarot symbolism. When I get the hang of the basics of tarot, I'll try my hand with Amano.
