Your heart was always somewhere else. Your mind was bound to follow eventually.
The lotus clouds the mind and saps the will, but it doesn't change who you are.

- Calypso, Odyssey 2026

This story and quote captures some different ways the maxim could be viewed by the lost and developing initiate as understanding the vector of their soul, flaws, and where they are placed in the universe.

In the new updated adaptation the dramatized conditions of Odysseus with Calypso and his time with her, as a hyperphysical being and human, is how any are able to survive reincarnation on their journey to cosmic alignment. To have space to find a way out of sensory lotus illusions from those that drank from Mnemosyne. Which is in my new model of reality(raft) and understanding of know thyself. This may not be helpful for others, though it is a truth that leads me through the illusions and self-deceptions home to Ithaca, Penelope and grace with Wisdom.
While those who don't align with the cosmos and aren't companioned with hyperphysical beings cannot.

It's much more fitting that Calypso is represented as an initiatory force rather than anti-initiatory in the new adaptation. And recognizing that and appreciating it is an example of me knowing myself and place in the universe.

Books, and any specific passages in them, that could help someone know themselves in this holistic sense would be particular to them.
Also timely sharing(kairos) of one's own discoveries in knowing themselves could help others more than a book, or maybe with it find in it their way.
