I know a lot of people recommend this ritual, some saying it can be used for the attainment of Knowledge & Conversation of the HGA, others saying its a powerful tool that has many uses.

If you have experience with it, what are some of the benefits you noticed from performing this ritual daily or otherwise semi-regularly?
What do you feel it has done for you?

I did it almost daily for a couple of years, inspired by the story of Crowley (ofcourse)
When you do it from a book about a month or so every day you will have memorized it, and then, like every invocation you do from the heart (girt with a Serpent..) it creates a sort of rush because you don't have to read it but can focus on the feelings.
What started to bug though is that almost none of the godnames / barbarous words play a part in the rest of the rituals I do and I feel nothing for "Egyptianism" at all.
When I discovered that ABARASA (Abraxas?) is Truth in Sumerian, and MUSHUS (Moshe Thy Prophet?) is Serpent in Sumerian I puzzled out meanings for the rest of the words that make some sense if you want to. But the fact still remained that there's really no connection in the names with the rest of (my) systems and gradually I stopped because of that.
But. Funny stuff. One of the first barbarous words is AOTH, which is close enough to the Enochian God of Mercury AAOTH.. so I have recently made the Come thou fort and follow me (etc.) part of the heart of my pseudo-Nochian opening ritual and it feels like it was meant to be there 😊

You're probably aware that Crowley's '

' is just a variation of the 'Headless One' (PGM V.96—172). Ok, fine, why not rewrite a Graeco-Egyptian ritual that's 1,500 year old but his unforgivable mistake was changing the 'barbarous words'/voces magicae which are what makes the ritual truly magic, in my opinion. I did it daily for about a year, and all I can say is that these 'barbarous words' are the spice of the whole rite. The way they roll off the tongue once you've learned the ritual by heart, they do something to you… I eventually had to stop, it all got too heavy for me (it might have also been the other daily exercises I did). I don't think the language you're doing the Headless One in matters, just leave the 'barbarous words' alone. What I used was the English version given in Jason Miller's 'Real Sorcery' because of its antiquated language (more poetic, IMHO) after checking the

for the correct 'barbarous words', they're absolutely crucial, I can't stress this enough.

The original PGM rite is said to have been an exorcism but that's really just one line:

Deliver him, NN., from the daimon that holds onto him

I left that out and replaced it with the DigitalAmbler's K&C HGA formula:

Send to me my neverborn friend and guardian, my supernatural assistant, my agathodaimon, my holy guardian angel! Send to me my guardian angel whose duty it is to guide, lead, assist, and protect me through this and all lives!

My reading is that it's a rite of empowerment that gets you pumped for any magic, so Matters (or Crowley?) was right in calling it the 'Preliminary Invocation of the Goetia' but it can be used as an introduction to any magic ritual you wish to perform, I'd say. It's aim is to become a god – not invoking a god but actually becoming one, in line with one of the core principles of Graeco-Egyptian magic, e.g.

I know you, Hermes, and you know me. I am you and you are me.

There have been all sorts of debates who the Headless One actually is but for my money, it's either the Demiurge or a generic god, like "Insert god name here". No fireworks and HGA so far but what it did was make me feel powerful, as if I was the Lord of all Creation. It's a different approach than in Abrahmic magic: in the PGM (and I think also in Egyptian magic), the gods are often bossed around, coerced or even blackmailed, there is none of that beseeching and supplicating, which I really found refreshing. The ritual has been designed to put you firmly into a position of power, and I loved that.

Thanks! Very good and valuable feedback. I would also stick to PGM version- the actual translation from Greek would be headless, not bornless as named by Crowley.

No problem! I tried 'Bornless' because Miller had it in his version but it just didn't feel right, so I switched to 'Headless'.

What do you feel it has done for you?
This will be different for every individual. The "benefits" can be internal and external in your life. First and foremost my viewpoint on "life" changed fairly radically over time. Many so-called mundane concerns became less of an issue. At times it's like viewing "life" from the "outside", like an "overview". Emotional changes too. Some of the "benefits" read "results" can be unsettling, especially at first, as your insights can be drastically challenged. Mundane physical changes can also occur as you progress. You may make these voluntarily, or they may simply "seem to happen".
I think it's best to have some kind of regularity when you begin this practice because that's when the initial resistance is the greatest, once a day is not too much. Over time I've found that I just "feel the need" and know I "should" perform a rite. The "degree" of your commitment and desire to practice are "Important"! The phrase "Inflame / Enflame thyself with prayer," read "Invocation" isn't there for no reason. It's "Hard Work".
What's happening is that your "ego'" or "persona / mask" is coming into contact with something that's perhaps a bit older and wiser?

Of the three common versions / variations: "Bornless Ritual for the Invocation of the Higher Self, Liber Samekh and the PGM Headless Rite",
I've come to favor the Headless PGM original as well. Over time you may find that changes in the "liturgy" suggest themselves, subtle messages.
Also worthwhile to checkout WF book shares for Jake Stratton-Kent's small "booklet" on the Headless Rite!
