Greetings
I've been practicing magick from GOM books but to avail, not attacking the GOM , some people told me that the problem is not with me but rather with GOM books since they lack any mention to energy work , some said I'm not meant to practice magico etc.... If you were in my shoes what would you do ? Thanks in advance for your time .

I like starting with smaller 'easier' magick such as basic witchcraft spells, Hoodoo and similar. They are like push ups; they are small easy steps that will prepare you for lifting heavy weights or they can be done on their own and you will still get strong.

I would start with easier content personally.

Im pretty new to magick as well and have had struggles with results and the feeling I'm not doing things correct. My advice would be to step back from the advice of the GOM and try something different.

Im a fan of chaos magick and its advice to diversify practices, so id recommend going back to the basics, figure out what you want from magick and find other rituals, practices and techniques to attempt to achieve that reality.

Sometimes it is hard to find what works for you. So if this is not working, try to find out something else. Practice takes time.

I'm in two minds about the GoM. On the one hand, they felt like a breath of fresh air to me, simplifying older, more bombastic methods, and I still like the commonsensical things Damon Brand had to say about the HGA in "Magickal Destiny". On the other, their main appeal seems to have been that their fans went "Could it be that easy?" and bought even more of their books. Their USP seems to be "Magic that will require no groundwork!", and I've come to think it's a flawed premise. I've worked through "Magickal Protection" and still perform the Sword Banishing Ritual every day; I did the whole year of "Success Magick" but these are areas where it's difficult to establish whether their magic has been effective or not – nothing major has befallen me, life has been comparatively good so far but that's about it. However, Brand's and Blaise's shem angel stuff did nothing for me, and the same goes for GoM copycats like Corwin Hargrove and Ben Woodcroft.

"Could it be that easy?" Apparently it can, for a few fortunate ones who perhaps have a natural aptitude for magic. All others, including me, would be well advised to establish some preparatory exercise routine (for me it's currently empty-mind meditation) like the first few stages of Bardon's IIH or Carroll's Liber MMM. That's me troubleshooting my magic, others may draw different conclusions or choose different approaches. "Could it be that easy?" You won't know if you don't try, that's the problem. I'd rather turn to chaos magic in an emergency, that's for sure.

" A breath of fresh air " is exactly how it was for me , I miss the old days when I first started dabbling in the occult . Thank you so much for these insights , I appreciate your time and efforts.

Despite the risk of sounding strange but i think this is important:

Mens sana in corpore sano - a healthy mind in a healthy body

Do some exercises, spend time in nature, meditate, learn about the world from various philosophies, and read, read , read...
Don't neglect to practice what you read, you know, little things at first..

I suggest books like Visual Magick by Jan Fries, which you can probably find in your local library. It's geared more towards practice than beliefs. Seidways is another of his I find very useful.

It's very true, actually. If the body isn't healthy you do not feel well and are limited. Healthy and strong body allows the soul to express itself the best.

Agreed. I've seen many people jump straight into the occult in their younger years and not only completely neglect physical and mental well being, but then go on ascribe malevolent magic as the cause of their being unwell, when in reality all that they needed to do was take an hour long walk or something a day.

A grounded mind through quiet living and regular meditation is, in my opinion, a prerequisite for magic. If we perform a 15 minute ritual to make us happier and more successful, but then go right back to dwelling on feeling bad all day long, which side has more real power over our lives?

If it's just GOM, there's nothing surprising about it. It simply means their narrative approach hasn't worked well for you. Even within other systems, it's easy to discover methods that resonate more personally. So ask yourself: Which stories do you truly believe in? And what does believing in them actually mean?
