I have had the most success by finding/creating my own ways, AFTER learning general theory in any given area. Example: reading channeled messages (some very inspiring experiences); then reading other people's advice on development of channeling (mostly frustrating); then developing my own way (long process of trial and error and practice, but overall effective results including a personal and unique experience).

Anyone have their own version of self-initiation in any specific area? Any recommendations or words of warning? Recently exploring tarot, i ching, astrology, but I would love to hear about other topics and areas of study.

I also prefer to study multiple schools without following too closely to any one. Philosophical Taoism resonated with me strongly because of its emphasis on detachment, withholding strong judgement. A variety of fortune telling methods seem to go hand in hand with this approach, because they're fluid and demand personal interpretation. The drawback here is that it takes much longer to build knowledge in the murkier esoteric fields that are usually hostile to attempts at "dabbling". Patience and caution are important, especially with volatile arts. It also seems important to maintain a balance between absorbing new influences and deepening one's understanding of the fields of inquiry that have already begun to hold their interest; this is not news to anyone who has difficulty resisting the allure of new hobbies.
